Litter Update

We would like the public to know that we, just like many communities across the country and state, are aware of the litter issues and that we have created a new position for littler prevention, so moving forward we are working to be more proactive. We have a long way to go, but the process has started. 
 
Those needing to report illegal dumping or volunteer to help cleanup may do so by visiting our website at www.sumtersc.gov/litter. 
 
Here is a snapshot of our six month progress:
  • Launched the City’s Litter Control website in December.
  • Four cleanup days since June. (5,000 lbs. of litter using 120 volunteers.) Cleaned 6 streets.
  • Identified 44 trash dumping areas and issued 9 tickets for a total of $2,000 in fines. Any area that could not be identified was cleaned up by the litter control officer.
  • Set up 5 cameras (through the Palmetto Pride Camera Loan Program) to catch littering and illegal dumping throughout the city.
  • Applied for a litter grant with Palmetto Pride to purchase cameras to control illegal dumping. Grant recipients to be announced January 29, 2021.
  • Seven people assigned a total of 140 hours of community service through the municipal court. They have collected 40 bags of trash that adds up to 4,000 lbs.

    • 11,130 lbs. in 2020
    • 4,335 lbs. in 2021.
    • 140 tires,
    • 30 TV’s,
    • 6 mattress’s,
    • 300 bags of trash.
